    Fran Hutchins, Director of the Bracken Bat Preserve, will speak about Mexican Freetail Bats. They happen to be one of our most populous mammalian neighbors. Did you know that the Bracken Cave, a short distance from Universal City, is the summer home of more than 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats? That makes it the world's largest bat colony and one of the largest concentration of mammals on earth!

  6. Senior Life: A Fresh Start to a Healthier You

    Erika Alaman, Health and Wellness Coordinator at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will be at the library at 11:15 AM on Tuesdays, September 4, 11, 18, and 25 to present a holistic health program aimed at older adults. Get the support of friends, and gain confidence to cook healthy meals, plus get practical cooking and shopping tips, and easy recipes. Everyone is welcome.   7. Bats in Our Neighborhood: The Bracken Bat Preserve

    September 25, 2018, 6:30 PM @ 100 Northview Drive

    Fran Hutchins, Director of the Bracken Bat Preserve, will offer a family-friendly program, "Bats in Our Neighborhood" in the library's meeting room. Bat snacks will be provided, and everyone is welcome! Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) live in caves in the southern US, Central and South America. Their colonies are the largest congregations of mammals in the world. The largest colony [at the Bracken Bat Preserve] has nearly 20 million bats, which eat around 250 tons of insects per night! Bats can travel hundreds of miles and fly to an altitude of 3,000 meters (10,000 feet or almost two miles) to feed on insects at night.
